Own Things, Don't Sell Time

Build or hold equity in assets that appreciate rapidly: selling your labor is linear and capped, however high the hourly rate.

Though there are some exceptions, entertainers for example, almost no one in the history of the Forbes list has gotten there with a salary.

Point twelve of How To Be Successful is about the structure of wealth, not its size: you get truly rich by owning things that increase in value, not by selling your time. A salary, however large, is linear and capped; equity in a scalable asset is not. So orient your career around ownership: of companies, of equity, of intellectual property.

His own balance sheet proves it. Altman’s fortune is almost entirely early equity in things he backed (Stripe, Reddit, Helion) rather than pay. The OpenAI role, where he takes a nominal salary and (he says) no direct equity, is the exception that only works because the ownership was already banked.

Doesn’t transfer to people living on the paycheck. Owning appreciating assets requires surplus capital, or the freedom to take equity instead of cash, both far easier once you’re already secure. For someone who needs this month’s wages, “don’t sell your time” describes a destination, not a step they can take from where they stand.
