Wield Capital as a Weapon

Use money not just to fund the business but to build a moat: buy the compute, energy, talent, and time competitors can't match, and raise at a scale that makes the fight uneconomical.

Altman’s real expertise is capital orchestration. At OpenAI he used money as a weapon: not merely to operate, but to buy the scarce inputs (compute, energy, talent) that a smaller rival simply cannot, and to raise at a scale that makes competing uneconomical.

Altman didn’t stop at the model. He personally back-integrated the AI supply chain, energy through Helion (fusion) and Oklo (fission), an identity layer through World, and lined up the Stargate infrastructure project (announced at up to $500B over four years).

Doesn’t transfer: this is an incumbent’s weapon. Capital-as-a-weapon is, almost by definition, a play only the largest players can run. It’s how incumbents crush challengers, the exact opposite of the scrappy-underdog advice Altman gives founders. Which side of the table he’s now on is the whole point of the move.
