Aggregate Talent: Be the Platform

Put yourself at the center of a flow of talent and capital so the ecosystem's best people default to coming to you, and then you get first pick of people, deals, and information.

The size of the network of really talented people you know often becomes the limiter for what you can accomplish.

The most powerful version of Altman’s network play isn’t building relationships one by one; it’s becoming the place they route through. Over eight years he turned himself into the hub of the tech ecosystem’s talent, step by step.

2011 Join YC Part-time partner, inside the funnel the whole ecosystem passes through.
2014 Run YC President; scale batches from 8 to 200+ companies.
2015 Add gravity Launch YC Continuity and YC Research.
2019 Cash it in YC Research had seeded OpenAI; he leaves to run it.

The payoff detonated in November 2023. When the board fired him, roughly 738 of ~770 employees threatened to quit and follow him, and Microsoft immediately offered to hire the group. He was back within five days. Aggregated talent loyalty was the leverage that reversed the decision.

Doesn’t transfer, and this is the least replicable play in the set. Becoming the aggregation point required an institutional platform (YC) almost no one will ever run. It’s less a move a founder can execute cold than a description of what already having Altman’s position makes possible.
