Manage Your Psychology

The deciding variable in most founder outcomes isn't intelligence; it's the ability to keep going without burning out. Engineer your own resilience.

Across his Startup Playbook and his 2014 Stanford “How to Start a Startup” lectures, Altman keeps returning to one claim: the founders who win are not the smartest, they’re the ones who are extremely persistent and willing to work hard, and who manage their own psychology well enough to sustain it. He names psychological resilience as a defining trait of his best founders.

The practical version. Engineer your life so persistence is sustainable rather than heroic: work you actually like, people you enjoy, and enough self-management to survive the year-seven grind that quietly ends most companies. Burnout, in his framing, is a failure of setup, not of willpower.

Doesn’t transfer as a rule. Persistence is only virtuous in hindsight. The same trait that saves a good company sinks a doomed one, and nobody can tell you in the moment which one you’re running. “Keep going” is the correct advice for the survivors we hear from and the wrong advice for the larger number we don’t.
