Be Willful

Treat most constraints as softer than they look: refuse the first no, keep pushing, and a surprising share of the world yields.

A big secret is that you can bend the world to your will a surprising percentage of the time.

Altman’s view is that most limits are more negotiable than they appear, and that relentless resourcefulness gets you most of the way to what you want. The most vivid proof is his own reinstatement, a five-day stretch in November 2023 where sheer willfulness (his, and that of the people loyal to him) reversed a board decision.

Fri Nov 17, 2023: Fired The board removes Altman as CEO, saying he was not "consistently candid" in his communications.

Nov 18–20: The revolt Greg Brockman quits in solidarity; roughly 738 of ~770 employees sign a letter threatening to resign and follow Altman.
Nov 20: Microsoft's offer Satya Nadella announces Altman and Brockman will join Microsoft to lead a new AI team, raising the stakes on the board.

Nov 21–22: Reinstated Altman returns as CEO under a reconstituted board; the directors who fired him are replaced.

Doesn’t transfer: willfulness is status-dependent. The same behavior lands very differently depending on your leverage. A founder with Altman’s network “bending the world” reads as decisive; the identical push from someone without leverage reads as entitled and gets doors closed. And the 2023 escape worked because ~95% of staff and OpenAI’s largest partner already wanted him back, willpower cashing in loyalty that was built long before the crisis.
