Be Internally Driven

Do the work to impress yourself, not others: external motivation fades exactly when the work gets hardest, so intrinsic obsession is the only thing that survives.

It is hard to be wildly successful at anything you aren't obsessed with.

The thirteenth and final point of How To Be Successful is about motivation: the most driven people Altman knows are driven internally, working to impress themselves rather than the crowd. External validation is unreliable precisely when you need fuel most, so pick problems you’d be compelled to work on even if no one were watching.

His cited evidence is his own pay. Altman points to holding, by his own account, no direct OpenAI equity and taking a roughly $76,001 salary as proof he isn’t in it for the money, the internal-drive principle turned into a personal signal.

Doesn’t transfer when you need the paycheck. “Not doing it for the money” is a stance that’s far cheaper to hold once you’re already independently wealthy, as Altman was, from a decade of YC-era investing before OpenAI. For a founder living on their salary, pure internal drive is a luxury, and the advice can read as out of touch with the constraint most people actually face.
