Scale Up What's Working

Once something is demonstrably working, the highest-leverage move is usually to pour in far more than feels comfortable, not to start something new.

Scale often has surprising emergent properties.

Altman’s instinct with a proven winner is to go bigger, not broader: finding the thing that works is the hard part, and once you have it, the discipline is to pour resources into it well past the point of comfort rather than diversifying into something fresh. In his 2024 essay he notes that “scale often has surprising emergent properties,” a reason to push a working thing further than feels reasonable, because new capabilities can appear only once you do.

Doesn’t transfer without access to capital at scale. “Pour billions into the working thing” is Altman’s edge precisely because almost no one can raise the billions. For a founder whose ceiling is the next modest round, the move collapses to “grow carefully,” which is a very different, and much slower, game than the one he’s describing.
