Focus and Intensity

Reduce the company, and yourself, to a few priorities, then pursue them with unusual speed and force. The scarce resource is attention, not hours.

It is much more important to work on the right thing than it is to work many hours.

Asked to distill operating a startup into two words, Altman’s answer in the Startup Playbook is “focus and intensity.” Pick the small number of things that matter, say no to the rest ruthlessly, and then move on them with a force most companies never muster. The bottleneck he’s optimizing is attention, not time on the clock.

At institutional scale. OpenAI’s decision to bet the lab on scaling transformer models, rather than hedging across a portfolio of research agendas, is this play written large. Concentration, not diversification, was the wager.

Doesn’t transfer without judgment and a cushion. High-conviction concentration is behaviorally identical to reckless over-betting; only the outcome sorts them afterward. Concentrating works when you have the judgment to pick right and the capital to survive picking wrong, and most founders have neither in the amount this play quietly assumes.
