Be Hard to Compete With

Deliberately make yourself or your business structurally hard to replicate: via an advantage that compounds with scale, or excellence at the intersection of several fields.

Point ten of How To Be Successful is a warning: “If what you do can be done by someone else, it eventually will be, and for less money.” Anything easily copied gets copied and commoditized, so the work is to build something structurally hard to replicate, a compounding advantage that grows with scale. He restated it in 2024 as building a business that gets a compounding advantage with scale.

Doesn’t transfer to the challenger. Scale-based moats favor whoever gets big first, which makes this useful advice for an incumbent and cold comfort for a challenger who, by definition, hasn’t got the scale yet. The moat you’re told to build is the same one being used to keep you out.
