Back the Researchers

Nvidia puts compute in the hands of scientists, where tomorrow's demand is invented, and the UK has been a recurring beneficiary.

I believe the greatest natural resource of the U.K. is the incredible researchers and scientists.

Huang’s line above comes from an Nvidia blog post of 18 September 2025, written around the UK state visit. The pattern behind it runs through the company’s history: give researchers more compute than they can get elsewhere, and the next generation of workloads gets invented on your hardware.

In the UK. Cambridge-1, Nvidia’s own system, launched in July 2021 at Kao Data in Harlow. It cost about $100M as reported by HPCwire and The Register (up from a £40M figure at its October 2020 announcement), used 80 DGX A100 systems, and was the UK’s fastest supercomputer at launch. It was aimed at life sciences, with partners including AstraZeneca, GSK, Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College London and Oxford Nanopore. Isambard-AI at Bristol, launched on 17 July 2025, is a £225M UK-government facility (part of the AI Research Resource) run by the University of Bristol with HPE and Nvidia. The university describes it as about 5,400 Nvidia GH200 superchips (5,448 in the full specification) and the UK’s most powerful supercomputer. On 14 October 2026 Nvidia then committed a five-year compute donation valued at $250 million (about $50 million a year, in kind rather than cash) for UK agentic safety and security research, delivered through UK-based Nvidia Cloud Partners, according to its press release; provider selection and commercial terms were still to be agreed.

Recognition. The 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, announced at London’s Science Museum in February 2025, was shared by seven laureates for modern machine learning. Huang and Nvidia’s chief scientist Bill Dally were among them, and King Charles III presented the prize at St James’s Palace in November 2025.

Doesn’t transfer as pure philanthropy. Research compute is also market-making and diplomacy. Data Center Dynamics reported that Cambridge-1 was part of Nvidia’s effort to win UK approval for its Arm deal. That isn’t a scandal. It does mean that gifts to researchers are smart strategy for a company that sells the tools they’ll need, and are best read with both eyes open.
