It's Okay to Be Wrong: Just Not Confidently Wrong

Being wrong is acceptable; being confidently wrong is not.

Being wrong isn't a problem. Being confident while being wrong is a huge problem.

Musk encourages intellectual humility and despises overconfidence without substance. Being wrong is acceptable; being confidently wrong is not.

“I’d rather someone state with uncertainty something that’s right than state with certainty something that’s wrong.”

The complementary Musk position: “I’d rather be an optimist and wrong than a pessimist and right.” These two ideas coexist. High ambition is fine; unfounded certainty is what destroys teams. It kills the feedback loops that would catch the error early.

In practice. Musk publicly admitted Tesla Autopilot limitations rather than defending imperfect systems, iterating through public criticism rather than around it. After the Model 3 automation failure (his words: “excessive automation at Tesla was a mistake. To be precise, my mistake”), he reversed course rather than doubling down on a flawed premise.

The failure tax. At SpaceX, engineers who identify a flaw early, even in their own prior work, are celebrated, not penalized. The expensive failure is the one no one reported because they were too confident to question it.

Apply it. Encourage “red team” debates where team members are rewarded for finding flaws in proposals, especially their own.
