Never Ask Your Troops to Do What You Won't

Lead from the front: never ask employees to make sacrifices you won't make yourself.

Musk leads from the front and never asks employees to make sacrifices he won’t make himself. That builds credibility and draws extraordinary effort.

Factory floor. Musk slept on the Tesla factory floor in 2018 during “production hell,” working 120-hour weeks alongside his team.

Financial risk. He invested his last $40 million to save Tesla in 2008, risking personal bankruptcy while asking employees to make sacrifices.

Technical work. He personally reviews code and engineering designs, showing he will dive into the technical details.

This echoes his 2008 bailout of his companies with personal funds, when he could have walked away wealthy from PayPal. Extreme effort becomes normal because the leader demonstrates it first.

Apply it. Join the grunt work during crunch times. It builds loyalty and shows leadership that can’t be faked.
